“Marriage Protest” by Lucy Stone & Henry Blackwell (1855)

  • We urge others to protest laws about marriage that give the husband unfair powers, including:
    1. Custody over the wife’s person
    2. Exclusive control & custody over their children
    3. Sole ownership of her personal property & real estate
    4. Rights to the fruits of her labor
    5. Laws give a widower more control over his deceased wife’s estate than to a widow over her deceased husband’s estate
    6. Women essentially cease to exist legally while married. No wills or lawsuits (for or against) allowed
  • Marriage doesn’t suspend a person’s legal rights or independence
    • It should be an equal partnership
