[Anthony Benezet], Instructions Regarding Negro Slaves Issued by the Society of Friends in its Monthly Meeting, 1754

  • It’s been brought up in every yearly meeting – importation & purchase of blacks & other slaves. We keep talking about it & it’s been a defining subject for Quakers.
    • We need to make it clear we oppose & promotion of slavery, & to urge the rest of our fellow citizens to reject the institution of slavery. At least then nobody can say that they were unaware of the moral arguments against slavery.
  • We’ve always heard the saying – Doing to others as we would be done by.
    • We shouldn’t imagine of abandoning that saying when it comes to slavery. We ought to offer to slaves the action of trying to secure their freedom just as we would hope they’d do if the roles were reversed.
    • To live any other way is to oppose the basic tenets of Christianity & justice.
    • It is the case where slavery & immorality prevail, moral & Christian life dies.
      • So, how can we who are really strong believers in Christ & the Gospels sit back & watch such an obvious affront to our morals, our Gospels & our God continue & thrive?
      • The practice is inhumane at every step of the way. The capture in Africa, the terrible importation & toiling away for the rest of their lives in slavery – all anti-Christian.
      • Our religion requires us to take up their cause.
    • The characteristic & badge of the true Christian is love & good deeds.
      • Jesus’s entire existence on earth was one non-stop message to that effect.
      • How can we live by that message & allow slavery’s existence & promotion?
