“Human Rights Not Founded on Sex” by Angelina Grimke (1838)

  • Thinking about slaves has made me realize abolition is the highest moral cause of our time
    • Humans have rights because they are moral beings
      • Since they all have the same moral nature, they all have the same rights
    • They’ve been taken from slaves but not alienated
  • If that’s the case, man has no higher rights & responsibilities that women don’t have
    • To say that they do would say physical condition implies moral nature
    • Both are subject to the same sets of right & wrong
    • Men’s & women’s duties are down to individual stations in life, their talents & the eras they live in
  • Focus on sex has excused all sorts of horrible things throughout history
    • Man’s been made into a warrior & woman has been made into a doll to be admired or a child to be protected or kept in line
    • It gives man the right to tyranny over a woman based on his whims
    • It takes away from woman the rights to think & act on moral questions & her share in responsibilities & her ability to fulfill her duties to God required of her
    • Instead of being a man’s equal partner, she’s merely a tool for his ends – a toy or a pet
    • Woman was not a gift to man but created in the image of God, with honor & glory – not lower than man
  • Taking a rib from Adam means they come from the same flesh as companions & equals, not his subject, only a subject under a God
  • Various attempts have been made to try to define what the rights & responsibilities are & why they might be different – size, strength, etc
    • Those can only define what they do & not moral responsibilities as moral beings
    • If we are moral equals & have the same moral duties, we must both be given rights in order to be free to act
    • What is moral for a man to do that isn’t for a woman?… No answer…
    • Jesus doesn’t give us different moral duties to us
      • Until churches recognize this, they can’t offer any improvement for the world
      • She’s considered the first transgression & victim of power but she’s not allowed to preach the gospel because she’s a woman
  • It’s a woman’s right to have a say in laws she’s subject to – in Church or State – & as it is now, her rights are being violated
    • If Church & State governments are ordained by God, woman has just as much of a right to have a seat at the table
  • Some don’t women to participate in the seediness of government & heavy burdens
    • Morality doesn’t change with respect to sex: moral is moral for men & women
    • Women suffer anyway from politics but allowing them involvement givers her the chance to own any mistakes made in government
    • The current situation makes her a subordinate to a fallible being – subject to his whims & mistakes
  • Allowing women rights allows them to rise intellectually & to fulfill her purpose given to her by God
    • They will work in the interests of society.
