Samuel Adams – On Resistance to Tyranny

Samuel Adams – On Resistance to Tyranny

  • Any nation feeling pain for having slavery deserves it
    • Zwinglius in Switzerland pushed for this idea, saying that those who suffer under oppression deserve what they allow & ought to die with their oppressors
    • All would be free if they valued freedom & defended it
      • Can millions be enslaved by a few without allowing it to some degree?
  • If people don’t want to be free or don’t have the virtue to maintain freedom, they don’t deserve pity, respect or a good name
    • Caesar became ruler because he saw Rome was willing to let it happen
      • He used his ability, hypocrisy & flattery to get his way
      • The people consented to their own ruin through persuasion & trickery
      • Caesar was made to be seen as a god & Rome thought it should submit to him & grant him lifelong powers – tyranny
  • Tyranny is at the door of America
    • We can discuss how it got there but it doesn’t matter if we’re not willing to stop it
    • Our enemy wants us to be lazy, indifferent or blind & will go to great lengths to do so
    • It’s even worse when it comes from our own countrymen & we’re told to keep quiet & take it
    • The taxes take away from the people without their consent
      • Claimed to be for our government & defense but it’s creating a parasite class living off our labor & wealth
      • The governor claims that it could be done otherwise but he’s just taking us for fools
        • He’s asserting himself as our master & his accumulation of power will make him a tyrant
        • Worse, the first of this kind wasn’t a foreigner but we have a local boy doing it, drawing his salary from our revenues
    • They’re taking away our money, our property, our liberty & now they’re taking away our understanding by tricking us into allowing it
  • The governor is appointed by the crown demanding 100% obedience or we should be removed from society
    • Supported at the expense of the people by a foreign ruler’s authority
      • This is despotism. The longer this goes on, the more it will cement itself & the harder it will be to undo – probably impossible
