“The American Crisis 13” by Thomas Paine (April 1783)

  • “The times that tried men’s souls, are over and the greatest and completest revolution the world ever knew, gloriously and happily accomplished.”
    • It’s very strange to go from the danger & tumult of war to the safety & tranquility of peace
    • Let’s reflect on the transition
  • We should be glad & grateful to have the chance to have a new creation in our hands
    • The future is so promising & we can be proud because our cause was right, our principles were liberal & just & our conduct was honorable
    • We are the most just founders of a new nation ever
      • The first Romans were ruffians & became rich through plunder & oppression
    • Let’s show the world what we can do through virtue in peace & virtue in war
  • Let’s now see victory in peace as the fruit of our own labor & never forget the reputation the justness of our independence is as important as our independence itself
    • The dignity & fame will do us favors internationally
  • Now America is one nation to the rest of the world even though we have political divisions in states
    • We must have a sovereign with enough power to protect our nation & all its parts
      • Look at Holland with states with individual sovereignty which leaves them the targets of the rest of Europe – that can’t last too long
    • Our citizenship is our national character & only statehood gives any local distinction
  • As for me, in my efforts to get us our freedom, unite our interests & help establish our nation, I’ve stayed out of business & government & stay out of political parties because they are dishonorable
  • It was the cause of America that inspired me to become an author
    • Seeing the unnatural strife between Britain & America made me care about America’s future
    • The Declaration of Independence made it impossible for me to sit on the sidelines & I had to help however possible
      • I hope my writings have helped
    • I always knew Independence was possible, so long as we could stir the feelings of patriotism & devotion to the cause
  • Now that the war is over, let’s get ready for happier times & know we helped the future of mankind
