“The American Crisis 1” by Thomas Paine (December 1776)

  • “These are the times that try men’s souls…”
    • The summer soldier & sunshine patriot won’t be doing too much now but those who continue to fight this winter are the real heroes
    • Tyranny isn’t easy to shove off but it’ll be worth it in the end
    • Britain’s declared that not only do we not have the right declare independence now but ever
      • That makes us slaves & prisoners, something only God has the right to say
  • It doesn’t matter if we declared independence too soon, too late or just in time
    • But we should have made the most of last winter & would’ve been better fighters this summer
  • This December, British General Howe has been playing around in New Jersey with skirmishes & not much damage done
    • He ought to have attacked Staten Island & taken all our provisions in New Brunswick & block us on the way to Pennsylvania
  • Thank God for General Washington
    • You can never tell if he’s nervous or anxious about the situation – always cool in battle
    • Let’s hope he stays healthy
  • Why are the British in New Jersey & Pennsylvania?
    • Because we are infested by tories/loyalists that the British have been invited in
    • Tories are cowards, servile & slavish
    • Howe’s mistaken if he thinks that he can count on them for actual military support
    • Real patriots & those who wish for peace will fight this war for their children’s sake
    • One thing we’ve learned this past summer is that force needs to be applied correctly, not overbearingly
  • Unfortunately, Howe will probably move towards Philadelphia, splitting our armies in half to the North & half to the South
    • The tories will change their minds under his control, which will be no picnic
  • I hope next year will bring about a battle that will get rid of them once & for all
    • Instead of dwelling on tories, let’s praise those who’ve been fighting
      • It’s important to keep on fighting because God knows the British will too
      • Those who don’t fight will be considered cowards by their children
    • I’m not a naturally fighting man but when I am attacked, I defend myself
      • Look at this war like this
    • Perhaps some can’t see it this way, yet because they haven’t been affected by the British but if Howe has any more luck, they’ll soon find out what they’re like
  • We have been able to survive & gain minor victories through our own bravery, good luck & Howe’s reluctance to fight us directly
    • We’ll carry on until either we win or we are utterly defeated
