The Iliad by Homer – Book 22

Book 22

  • The Trojans were in the city
  • Apollo let Achilles know he had fooled him to let the Trojans in. Hector was standing at the gate
  • Achilles is pissed off that he’d been fooled but realizes he can’t do anything about
  • Achilles makes for the gate. Priam sees this and shouts to Hector – get your ass inside
    • He realizes either Hector can’t hear or he won’t listen
    • He realizes that if this fight actually happens, Hector’s a dead man
  • Priam says that Alexandrus’s greed and Hector’s arrogance has fated Troy to destruction
  • Hector thinks as Achilles approaches him
    • Maybe if I give Helen back, he’ll go away
    • Maybe if I give him half the city’s gold
    • No… Achilles wants to kill me
    • Maybe Jove will help
  • Hector is quaking in his boots and decides to run. Achilles chases him. They ran around the wall 3 times.
  • The god watched this and debated doing something. Jove thought of how loyal Hector had been to him
    • Minerva told him – you can’t change this man’s fate!
    • Jove says – Only joking
  • Achilles can’t quite catch Hector and Hector can’t quite get away from Achilles. As they were coming around again Jove decides he’ll die.
  • Minerva tells Achilles this battle will go his away
  • Then Minerva appears as Hector’s brother, Deiphobus and said – Let’s fight Achilles together
  • Hector – Thanks, buddy! I knew you were my favorite brother.
  • Minerva/Deiphobus – everyone begged me to stay inside but I couldn’t leave you all alone
  • Hector to Achilles – All right, asshole. Let’s have this out once and for all. But let’s treat the loser’s body nicely.
  • Achilles – Don’t worry about that shit. You’ll die soon enough for all the grief you’ve done me
  • He threw a spear at Hector, who dodged it. Minerva got it back for Achilles.
  • Hector – You can forget about me trembling in front of you. If I die, I’ll be facing you.
  • Hector threw a spear and his Achilles’s shield. He noticed that was his only spear and called for Deiphobus to help him out. They he realized
    • Those bastard gods tricked me. They have doomed me. I’ll takes Achilles with me
  • Hector took out his sword and jumped at Achilles.
  • Achilles moved towards him and found a spot on Hector not covered with armor around the collar bone and stabbed him.
  • He approached Hector and said – Tonight, I’ll bury Patroclus and I’ll feed you to the vultures and the dogs.
  • Hector – Please don’t feet me to the dogs. My parents will pay you well.
  • Achilles – No amount of money will stop me from letting this happen. Your parents will never be able to mourn over you.
  • Hector – You are heartless. Paris and Apollo will get you… (He dies)
  • Achilles – Whatever the gods want…
  • Achilles pulled out his spear. Greeks came up to him and congratulated him.
  • He took off Hector’s armor – actually his armor and spoke to the Greeks
    • While I’d like to fight on, I ought to tend to Patroclus. That was my plan. Let’s take Hector’s body with us
  • Achilles poked and prodded the body with his spear. He tied it up to his chariot and dragged it around on the ground on the way back to the ships.
  • Hector’s parents saw this and wept. They begged him to stop.
  • Hector’s wife hadn’t yet heard the news. She was about to start a bath when she heard the crying outside. She found out and started crying uncontrollably – for herself and for her son who’ll never know his father.
