The Iliad by Homer – Book 21

The Iliad by Homer – Book 21

  • Achilles chased the Trojans to the river where they split into 2 groups
    • 1 – went back to the city
    • 2 – was pinned against the river where many drowned
  • Achilles attacked and killed so many that the river turned red with the blood
  • He caught sight of a man, Lacaon, Priam’s son, who had been taken prisoner earlier and ransomed. He wasn’t going to give him another chance, particularly after Patroclus’s death
  • Lacaon begged for his life and this disgusted Achilles. He killed him and threw him into the river so that the body would drift off to sea. That way his parents would never be able to mourn for him properly
  • Meanwhile the river god was getting upset about all the bodie
  • A Trojan, Asteropaeus, threw 2 spears at Achilles. 1 grazed his elbow and the other got stuck in the muddy banks of the river
  • As Asteropaeus tried to retrieve it, Achilles killed him
  • Then he chased down a bunch of Trojans when the river god, Scamander, told him to stop throwing bodies in the water.
  • Achilles ignored him and continued killing Trojans
  • The river asked Apollo to do something, with no luck
  • The river threw wave after wave knocking Achilles over, nearly drowning him
  • He held onto a root of a large tree which eventually fell over, damming the river
  • Scamander sent another wave of waves his way and then a spear. Achilles tried to run but the waves continued until he was pulled into the river. He prayed for help
  • Minerva and Neptune reassured him that he wouldn’t down but he had to keep fighting.
  • Scamander and his brother, Simois attacked him more
  • By request from Juno, Vulcan put fires on each side of the river to contain the water and let Achilles go free
  • Jove watched this and laugh. He enjoyed watching the gods fight with each other
  • Mars and Minerva fought. Venus tried to join in but Minerva smacked her so hard on the tits that both Venus and Mars fell over
  • Neptune tried to reason with Apollo
    • Neptune – Why are you helping Troy? They imprisoned us both there. I build their walls and you tended their sheep
    • Apollo left in anger
  • Diana yelled at Apollo, calling him a coward. Juno boxed her ears for this. Diana complains to Jove who isn’t having any of it
  • Priam watched Achilles heading for Troy and began to panic. He ordered that the gate be pulled up to let as many men in as possible.
  • Agenor challenges Achilles but nothing comes of the fight and Apollo whisks him away
  • Apollo draws Achilles away form the walls and gate to allow more Trojans to enter the city.
