The Iliad by Homer – Book 18

The Iliad by Homer – Book 18

  • Antilochus was on his way to Achilles
  • Achilles watched the battle and wondered around
    • Achilles – The bravest Myrmidon is supposed to die. Patroclus was told not to attack the city…
  • Antilochus arrived and told him the news that Patroclus is dead and there’s a battle of the body and armor.
  • Achilles grabbed dust and rubbed his face with it. He fell over, pulled his hair and waited
  • The cries are so loud that Thetis can hear him from under water. She comes to see him
  • Achilles says to her
    • Achilles – Jove’s protected me but had Patroclus killed. I won’t rest until Hector’s dead
    • Thetis warns him he’ll die if he kills Hector
    • Achilles – I want to die. There’s no meaning to anything anymore. Nothing can stop me from killing Hector
    • Thetis – That’s nice but you don’t have any armor. I’ll get Vulcan to fix you one up. He owes me favor.
  • Meanwhile the Greeks and the Trojans weren’t making any progress against each other for the body and armor.
  • Iris was sent by Juno to go down to the fight while the Greeks were dying to get the body. The Trojans want it for dog food.
  • Achilles – I don’t want to fight without armor. Thetis is fixing one up for me
  • Iris – Still, go down there. Dig a trench. Hoot and holler. Maybe you’ll scare the Trojans a bit.
  • He went down to the trenches and waited for his armor. He and Minerva shouted and scared the hell out of the Trojans. 12 men died from the sound. This gave the Greeks enough time to get the body and bring it to him
  • They put it on a bier and cried as the sun set.
  • Meanwhile the Trojans debated
    • Polydamas – Let’s go back to the city while we can. We’ll be safe there. If not, Achilles is going to go mental on us.
    • Hector – I’m tired of being cooped up. I don’t want to wast the protection that Jove’s given us. We’ll eat and sleep here. Tomorrow, we’ll finish them off. I’ll find Achilles and fight him. Whatever happens happens.
  • The Trojans agreed with Hector and stayed.
  • Meanwhile, the Greeks mourned Patroclus
    • Achilles – I wish I could take you home but I know I’ll die here too. I’ll kill as many Trojans I can in revenge. I won’t bury you until I kill Hector.
  • They cleaned the body, anointed it with oil and wept most of the night
  • Jove to Juno – I see Achilles will fight now just like you want
  • Juno – Achilles was always going to fight for the revenge of Patroclus’s death.
  • Thetis went to Vlucan’s place and spoke to him and his wife Charis. Vulcan made an armor with images of soldiers, city life, country life, victory, heaven and earth.
  • Thetis took this down to Achilles
