The Iliad by Homer – Book 10

The Iliad by Homer – Book 10

  • The Greeks were all sleeping – except Agamemnon. He watched the Trojan fires on the plain and looked his troops and sighed. He decided to go speak with Nestor.
  • Meanwhile, Menelaus couldn’t sleep either. He felt bad that all the Greeks were there fighting for him. He went to Agamemnon and he spoke first:
    • Menelaus – Why are you strapped with weapons? Are you going off on some night mission? That’s pretty wild
    • Agamemnon – We need help if we’re going to prevent Jove from wiping us out. Go get Ajax and Idomenes. I need Nestor’s help with orders. Wait there. We might miss each other in the dark.
  • He went to see Nestor, who was sleeping
    • Agamemnon – I can’t sleep. I’m worried about our men. I just don’t know if we can take anymore.
  • Nestor – Hector can’t count on Jove too much. If we can convince Achilles to come back. I’ll chat with Ajax and Idomeneus. However, I find it strange that Menelaus is sleeping and leaving all the worrying to you.
  • Agamemnon – Nope. He’s been up longer than me. He’s already getting Ajax and Idomeneus. They should be ready.
  • Nestor got dressed and they went to meet them. They saw Ulysses and called him over. They got Diomed. Diomed got dressed and armed. Once enough of them were around, Nestor spoke:
    • Nestor – We need to find out what the Trojans are up to. One of you needs to have a snoop around and find out.
  • Diomed volunteered and chose Ulysses to come with him. They put on their armor, bows and arrows.
  • Minerva sent them a Heron to guide their way through the woods among the dead bodies.
  • Meanwhile, Hector was consulting with his advisers.
    • Hector – Someone’s got to go over and see what the Greeks are up to
    • Dolon volunteered.
  • Ulysses heard Dolon coming. He let him approach so they could nab him. They went to get him but he heard them and ran away. Minerva gave Ulysses super speed
  • Ulysses missed him with a spear on purpose to freeze him on the spot.
    • He begged for his life, offering them a ransom
  • They asked what he was up to… He explained that Hector offered him a ton of money and horses to spy on the Greeks
  • They pumped him for more information about Hector, the army and why most of them weren’t in the city. The ones outside the city were mostly non-Trojans, allies to watch over the field while the Trojans were in the city. He told more about their allies and their strengths and weaknesses.
  • They didn’t think it’d be safe to let him free, so they killed him, took his armor and made a sacrifice to Minerva.
  • They carried on and found a band of Thracian soldiers sleeping. Diomed killed the men while Ulysses sent the horses away. Diomed was looking for more for his young street cred but Minerva told them to get back home before another god would wake up the Trojans.
  • Apollo woke up Hippocoon, who saw the horses were gone and a bunch of men were lying around dead. He woke the Trojan camp on the field.
  • Ulysses and Diomed rode off with the horses to their camp.
  • They told Nestor about the Thracians they had killed and whose horses they had stolen. They prayed again to Minerva and offered her a sacrifice
